Message from the Fire Chief

Welcome to the Sparks Fire Department website.  I hope the information contained here gives you a better understanding of our fire department and what we do.  The number one priority for the City of Sparks is to promote the safety, health, and well-being of our community.  The fire department supports this goal through the services we provide.

Our mission is to provide the highest level of fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care, and related services to the citizens, businesses, and visitors of the City of Sparks, through continuous improvement, professional development, and dedication to the community.

In order to do this, the fire department is organized into four divisions, each having a distinct role in support of our mission.  The divisions are: Administration, Operations, Fire Prevention, and Training.

The Administrative Division (Admin) provides a variety of services that support the other divisions within Department.  The Admin staff ensures the administrative needs of the Department are met so all our employees can do their jobs in the most efficient manner.  The Admin Division is responsible for the management of personnel, records retention, risk management, budgeting, asset management, and long-range planning.  Whether it is ordering supplies, maintaining our stations, or ensuring our personnel records are up to date, the Admin staff exists not only to support the organization, but to advance it.

The Operations Division (Ops) is responsible for emergency preparedness and response.  Our services have expanded over the years, and our ability to respond to a variety of incidents is a testament to our desire to serve.  We continually evaluate the needs of our community and look for better ways to improve our response capabilities.  Some of the services provided by the Ops Division are fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue (high angle, confined space, and trench collapse), hazardous materials response, and water rescue.  The fire department and its employees endeavor to respond as quickly as possible to all emergency incidents and to mitigate these incidents in a safe and efficient manner.

The Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) attempts to prevent fires through an aggressive fire prevention program that minimizes risk through education, enforcement, and engineering.  As the City of Sparks continues to grow, the role of the FPB becomes increasingly important to ensure a safe environment for all members of the community.  Our FPB personnel use their knowledge and experience to educate our citizens on fire safety, and assist them in identifying potential fire and life safety hazards.

The Training Division (Training) ensures compliance with federal, state, and local requirements, as well as nationally accepted standards.  More importantly, the Training Division ensures that our personnel have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve the needs of our community.  Training invests thousands of hours every year to support our firefighters.  Their ability to provide this support is instrumental in the delivery of a quality product.

It is important to remember that an organization is only as good as its employees, and I want to give credit to the professional and dedicated employees of the Sparks Fire Department.  As members of a service organization, they are the ones that make this department special, and the ones that strive for excellence in everything they do.  I encourage you to visit our fire stations, meet your firefighters, and see all they do to keep our community safe.

Fire Chief
