Mayor Ed Lawson

Ed Lawson was officially sworn in as Sparks' Mayor on September 14, 2020

Sparks City Manager

Neil Krutz arrived at the City in July 1997, beginning his Sparks career in the design and construction division of the public works department. Among his early capital project assignments was the gravel-pit-to-beach project, now lovingly called the Sparks Marina Park. He has served in many roles for the City during his 23+ year tenure. Mr. Krutz was appointed City Manager by Mayor Ron Smith and confirmed by the Sparks City Council in February 2019.

Mayor, City Council, and City Manager General Information

The City of Sparks has a council/manager form of government where the mayor and city council make policy decisions which the city manager and his staff implement. The mayor and five member council, are elected for staggered four year terms. The City Manager is Neil Krutz.

Ward 1

Donald Abbott was elected to his first term serving the City and residents of Ward 1 in November of 2016 and reelected in November 2020.  He is the first millennial and youngest person to serve on the Sparks City Council. 

Ward 2

Councilmember Dian VanderWell was appointed to the Sparks City Council on September 14, 2020 when Ward 2 Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tempore Ed Lawson was sworn in as the City’s 26th Mayor.

Ward 3

Councilman Paul Anderson was appointed as Ward 3 Councilman by Mayor Ron Smith on December 10, 2018. Mr. Anderson has been a resident of Sparks for more than 30 years and is currently employed an account executive with Pilot Thomas Logistics, specializing in national accounts and government contracts. 

Ward 4

Councilmember Charlene Bybee was elected to serve Ward 4 on the Sparks City Council in November 2014 and re-elected in 2018.  Ms. Bybee is a lifelong Sparks resident who has been an active community leader for more than 30 years.

Ward 5

Councilman Kristopher Dahir was elected to his first term serving the City and residents of Ward 5 in November 2016. He has called Nevada “home” for 36 years and holds degrees in psychology and strategic leadership. For most of his career, he has concentrated on work with non-profits and businesses to help them run more concise and focused operations.
