Sparks Fire Department Offers Free Residential Smoke Alarm Installation

Sparks, NV – The Sparks Fire Department is offering Sparks residents, with homes built before 1994, free installation of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as part of their ProjectSAFE Program.

ProjectSAFE (Survive A Fire Emergency) was established in 2007 and provides vital education and information about smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and general home fire safety.

“Each year, roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that are defective,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Chris McCubbins. “The purpose of the program is to educate Sparks’ citizens about the importance of working smoke alarms and to provide education about escape planning and fire reporting procedures.”

The ProjectSAFE program provides 10-year smoke alarms in each sleeping area, hallway and floor level, 10-year batteries if resident’s current detectors are less than two-years-old, strobe and bed-shaker alarm kits for the hearing-impaired, a personal home safety checklist, escape plan diagram, stickers and other safety information for the entire family.

Residents of Sparks with homes built before 1994, are encouraged to call the Fire Prevention Bureau at (775) 353-2266 or email sfdoffice@cityofsparks.us to schedule an installation time. The next installation dates are September 17 and 19 and October 15 and 17.
