Sierra Arts Foundation and City of Sparks partner for virtual Spark the Imagination series

SPARKS, Nev. (June 26, 2020)Sierra Arts Foundation, a nonprofit teaching, nurturing and supporting local art and artists, is partnering with City of Sparks this summer for Spark the Imagination, a series of virtual performances and art workshops for students ages six to 12 featuring various professional artists.

“We’re so excited to see the Sparks community come together for this introduction into the arts,” said Tracey Oliver, executive director at Sierra Arts Foundation. “During Spark the Imagination, families will get to learn about their community, all while enjoying performances and creating art from the comfort of their own home. It’s an ideal blend of education and art.”

Spark the Imagination weekly workshops premiere Saturday, June 27 via Facebook from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST, with programming each Saturday until July 25. Families will be able to watch live or after the fact. Each program features an hour-long performance and an art project. Students can complete the project using common materials found around the house. For kids who do not have access to art materials, 50 Spark the Imagination Art Kits will be available for free on a first come first serve basis. Families can register for a kit online and pick up at the Depot Gallery in Sparks at 831 Victorian Ave. or the Virginia Street Gallery at 17 N. Virginia St. Kits come with everything a student needs for all four July workshops, including colored pencils, construction paper, and glue. Families who don’t reserve a kit can purchase all supplies for around $10.

“Arts keep us all connected in a normal world,” said Francine Burge, Special Event Supervisor of the City of Sparks. “Now more than ever, we need the arts to keep us engaged and inspired. So this program is helping our kids connect to the arts while sheltering at home.”

During Artown, Spark the Imagination is a weekly workshop. In August, the program will switch to monthly workshops on the last Saturday of the month, beginning on August 25. For the foreseeable future, the workshops will be online.
