May is Older Americans Month

May means Older Americans Month and Washoe County Human Services Agency Senior Services Division, City of Reno, City of Sparks, and the Regional Transportation Commission are launching a fun-filled schedule beginning with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Washoe County Senior Services Center on 9th Street in Reno.

As part of opening ceremonies, Washoe County Human Services Agency Senior Services is hosting an information fair for seniors, highlighting several programs and services available for our elderly population. With more than 40 local agencies participating, citizens can also learn about ways to volunteer to help seniors.

Washoe County Senior Services, the cities of Reno and Sparks, along with several partnering agencies, are hosting more than 100 events throughout May as part of this year’s theme to help seniors engage at every age.

Free Events in Sparks include:

May 12 – 10 to 11 am – Celebrate Senior Day at the Sparks Heritage Museum with a one-hour walking tour and learn more abut the history of downtown Sparks. 820 Victorian Ave, Sparks (775) 355-1144.

May 15– 11:30 am to 12:30 pm – Meet Sparks Council members Charlene Bybee and Donald Abbott at the Sparks Senior Center-97 Richards Way, Sparks (775) 353-3110.

May 16 – 10:30 to 11:30 am- Learn about fire safety prevention from city of Sparks Fire Inspector James Recob- Sparks Senior Center- 97 Richards Way, Sparks (775) 353-3110. 

There are many other free  events throughout  Washoe County as well!

Incline Community Assistance Center Open House from 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Bocce Ball and meet and greet with seniors at Renaissance Hotel from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Pick up a copy of the Older Americans Month Booklet at Sparks City Hall, Reno City Hall, Incline Village Parks and Recreation, Sun Valley General Improvement District, and all Washoe County Libraries and local senior centers.

Numbers to Know

376,254 meals a year delivered to seniors through the HSA Home Delivered Meal program.

20,782 Washoe County seniors receive services through various HSA programs during FY 17.
