SPARKS FIRE DEPARTMENT SMOKE ALARM EDUCATION & INSTALLATION PROGRAM

GOAL
To protect loss of life and help you Survive A Fire Emergency.  Project SAFE is a free program, for every citizen within the City of Sparks. Through education and installation of smoke detectors, Sparks Fire Department wants to ensure every citizen, within our Community, is prepared for a disaster.

WHY
Each year, roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  In one-quarter of the reported fires in homes equipped with smoke alarms in 2004, the devices did not work.  Households with non-working smoke alarms now outnumber those with no smoke alarms.  According to the NFPA, aging smoke alarms don’t operate as efficiently and often are the source of nuisance alarms.

PURPOSE
The Purpose of the program is three-fold, (1) to educate Sparks citizens about the importance of working smoke alarms in the home; new smoke alarm technology; fire escape planning; and fire reporting procedures, (2) to assist citizens by installing new 10-year Lithium battery operated smoke alarms in every sleeping room and hallway of homes built before 1994, (3) to get citizens to install new 110 volt 10-year Lithium battery back-up smoke alarms in every sleeping room and hallway of homes built after 1994 having smoke alarms over 10 years old.
