For Immediate Release

Contact: Francine Burge, Special Events Supervisor, fburge@cityofsparks.us

Sparks, NV – Safety measures call for portions of the Sparks Marina Park to be closed during the US Open of Watercross event, which takes place Friday through Sunday, June 16-18. During the racing, watercraft can top speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour, necessitating some partial and temporary closures of the marina.

The dog park located on the south side of the Sparks Marina will be closed to the public on Friday, June 16 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, June 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday, June 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Additionally, use of paddling or sailing crafts will be restricted to the north side of the lake, close to the swim beach, during the racing portion of the event.

Event hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Friday is reserved for testing.

The Sparks Marina Lake is continuously recharged with fresh filtered water from an underground aquifer. This process is similar to an artesian well and produces a water quality that exceeds standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for recreational use. The lake is monitored regularly to ensure excellent water quality.
