Registration for the City of Sparks Spring Softball Leagues has been extended to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9. Men and women, age 18 and older are encouraged to play. There are opportunities for beginners on up to tournament players and seniors. The comprehensive program is one of the largest per capita softball programs in the country, offering the following leagues:
Men's 2-night per week (16 games), cost: $725
Men's 1-night per week (10 games), cost: $575
Men's 35+ (10 games), cost: $575
Women's (10 games), cost: $575
Coed (10 games), cost: $575
Senior Softball 50+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+ and Women's 50+, cost: $400
An additional late fee of $35 will be applied.
League play will take place Monday through Friday, April 15 to June 28 at the Golden Eagle Regional Park and Shadow Mountain sports complexes.

5000 Spectators expected for Professional Beach Volleyball Competition
and Personal Watercraft Races at Sparks Marina
The Sparks Marina Park is the location of the Sparks Xtreme Beach Sports Festival - EVP Volleyball Tour and the UWP Watercross Tour. This is the first time these combined events will be visiting the west coast! Both tours are the largest of their kind in the country with over 500 All-American male and female athletes expected to compete. Watch great beach pro volleyball action on the shore and handle bar-to-handle bar race action on the lake.
Spectator admission is free to all events. The EVP Pro Beach Volleyball and Grand Prix of Watercross viewing areas are wheelchair accessible.
Following is a rundown of the schedule:
Corporate Challenge
- Four-person teams compete for a bragging rights on Friday, June 29 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- 4 on 4 Beach Volleyball Event
- 4 Team JetSki Event
- Sponsors, city officials and media will have teams competing
EVP Pro Beach Volleyball
- Two-person teams compete for a $5,000 purse starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30.
- A clinic with EVP pros starts at 11 a.m.
- Semi-final games start at 3:30 p.m.
- The finals start at 5 p.m.
Grand Prix of Watercross
- More than 200 watercraft teams from across the country vie for $10,000 in prizes from 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday June 30 and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday July 1.
- Pro Roundabout races are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
- Autograph sessions with the pros are at 11:20 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 12:50 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
- Pro freestyle finals are at 12 p.m. Sunday.

The Sparks Fire Department is hosting its 2nd Annual Project SAFE Golf Fundraiser on July 30 at D’Andrea Golf Course. The fundraiser is held to obtain funds for the purchase of life-saving smoke alarms and fire safety paraphernalia for eligible older homes in the City of Sparks. Through the funding of a Federal Grant and last year’s Golf Fundraiser, we were able to purchase and install 921 smoke alarms in 345 eligible homes in 2010. We are making every effort to continue this program until we have installed new smoke alarms in all Sparks homes older than 1994.
At $95 per person or $350 per foursome, the price is right and it will be the most enjoyable golf tournament you will play in all year. Entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, T-gift bag, team photo, dinner, and hole prizes. A raffle, silent auction, and awards will follow the tournament. If you haven't made the Scheels Turkey Trot at the Sparks Marina part of your Thanksgiving tradition, you're missing out! It's a great place to spend time with family and friends, and a healthy way to start a day usually filled with a whole lot of eating.
The event starts and finishes in the parking lot of Scheels at Legends at Sparks Marina. The courses are user-friendly for both runners and walkers.
Participants can choose from a 2-mile walk or run (not timed) or a 10K (6.2 miles) run (timed). Pre-registration will be held through Nov. 17. You can register online at active.com or download the entry form here. Applications are also available at the Sparks Recreation Office (98 Richards Way, M-TH 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) or at Scheels (1200 Scheels Drive).
After November 18, registration will be available on the race day only. Shirt sizes are not guaranteed for race day registrations.
Every runner and walker will receive a commemorative sweatshirt and post-race refreshments.Proceeds benefit Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful for local beautification projects.
